WHAT’S NEW IN THE ST. JOSEPH’S
DEVELOPMENT/ CAPITAL CAMPAIGN OFFICE?

“Celebrating our Faith and Committing to our Future” Capital Campaign
In a letter from Bishop Smith to Monsignor Flynn, the Diocese of Trenton requested that we place the Capital Campaign on “hold” for one year before beginning the public phase.  This was done in order to give Monsignor Flynn’s successor time to settle in and to familiarize himself with the Parish, our parishioners, our schools, and of course, the goals and all the elements of the Campaign itself. The Parish’s initial (quiet) phase was successful, raising $2.691 million dollars and collecting over one million dollars from these pledges.  We encourage our donors to continue sending their pledge payments. If you have any questions concerning this decision, please call Tony Chiariello at 732-349-0018, Ext. 2228, or e-mail at sjctonyc@yahoo.com.

Annual Parish Appeal –As of May 1, 2008, St. Joseph ’s received approximately $115,000 in the Annual Parish Appeal. The parishioners and current SJGS parents have received a second letter concerning this Appeal.  As you know, the High School Advancement Office solicits the MDHS groups. In the Appeal 2006-07, St. Joseph ’s raised over $158,000. A letter to those prospective donors, who contributed at the $100 or higher level to the Appeal 2006-2007, but who have not made a gift to this Appeal 2007-2008, has been sent to remind them that the Appeal extends until June 30, 2008 .

Carpenter’s Classic – MDHS veteran teacher and coach, Ken Oliver, has assumed the duties of Carpenter’s Classic Race Director.  Fortunately, several of the members of the Carpenter’s Classic Committee have been with the event since its inception 11 years ago.  The three previous Race Directors, Frank Costello, Joe Gomulka, and Frank Mari, have agreed to help Ken with the event, along with other Committee members.   Ken reported that he has confirmed the date of Saturday, September 27, 2008 , with the Borough of Seaside Park as the date for this year’s race/walk.   Thanks to Stephen D’Onofrio, its owner, the Sawmill Restaurant will once again serve as headquarters for the event.  A race flyer is available.  Members of the Carpenter’s Classic Committee continue to seek additional major sponsors. A goal is to reach the figure of 1,000 runners/walkers, and each year, we come closer to this goal. Perhaps this will be the year!

The Endowment Committee Announces Monsignor Flynn as Honoree – Jack Sudia, the Chairperson of the St. Joseph ’s Endowment Committee for Catholic Education, announced that the Reverend Monsignor Sean P. Flynn has agreed to be the honoree for the fall reception, which will take place on Friday, October 24, 2008, at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Lakewood .  The Committee members are excited that Monsignor Flynn has agreed to this, and they vow to make this a special night, not only for St. Joseph ’s but also for Monsignor Flynn. As you know, when this event takes place in October, Monsignor Flynn will have moved on to a new assignment.

Tony Chiariello Assists Michele Williams and SJGS on its Strategic Planning  As of early May, Kellyanne Murphy SJGS ’79 has done a wonderful job in facilitating two sessions on strategic planning for SJGS.  Kellyanne feels she needs at least one more meeting with the Strategic Planning Committee, which is comprised of the SJGS Advancement Advisory Council (AAC) members.  Fifteen other couples or individuals have expressed an interest in joining this Strategic Planning Committee, and Kellyanne, Mrs. Williams, and Tony will invite them to join our efforts in the next few months.

CARTRIDGE RECYCLING – Good News!  Effective immediately, PrintAgainInk has assumed the collection of laser and inkjet cartridges for recycling.  In addition to the laser cartridges (Apple, Canon, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Lexmark, NEC, Okidata, Panasonic, Pitney Bowes, Ricoh, and Xerox), you can now deposit Epson cartridges.  Inkjet cartridges that can be recycled include Apple, Canon, Hewlett Packard, and Lexmark. In addition to the cartridge recycling, PrintAgainInk is also accepting cell phones for recycling.  Please help us in the fundraising effort! You will notice the new cardboard containers with the recycling logo located in front of the gathering space.   Please place your used laser jet and inkjet cartridges and cell phones in these boxes.   For further information, please call Dale in the Development Office at 732-349-0018, Extension 2208.

Development Office Reports on Types of Fundraising

Weekly, monthly giving –Weekly and monthly giving at Masses still provides the base for fundraising at St. Joseph ’s, allowing us to cover maintenance expenses. St. Joseph ’s encourages parishioners to participate in the new ParishPay program.  Information and registration packets are available in the gathering space of the Church or at the Parish Office. Refer also to the St. Joseph ’s Parish website, www.stjoesparish.org.

Annual Parish Appeal –The Pastor and principals establish the Appeal’s goals, which correspond to the fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).  Donors designate where to direct their money— St. Joseph ’s Church, SJGS, or MDHS.  The Appeal amounts supplement the budget and allow St. Joseph ’s to work on specific, stated enhancement projects. The Appeal’s importance does not diminish during the capital campaign, as our current facilities and programs need to be maintained. These funds are are not co-mingled.

Initial Phase of the Capital Campaign – Monsignor Flynn and Campaign Executive Committee members continue to meet with prospective donors concerning St. Joseph ’s plans for the future and the donors’ commitment to these plans.

Phase 1A of the master plan amounts to some $10 to 11 million. The four capital components of the plan are: creating at least 100 additional parking spaces; finishing the lower level of the Church; and building new wings at both SJGS and MDHS. The fifth component of the plan is increased funding for the St. Joseph ’s Endowment Fund for Catholic Education.

This is an ambitious effort that will culminate in final approval from the Diocese of Trenton to proceed. The Campaign, entitled “Celebrating Our Faith & Committing to Our Future,” creates more space, consolidating and establishing a permanent home for St. Joseph ’s in Toms River .

St. Joseph ’s Endowment Fund for Catholic Education – Endowment addresses the long-term financial foundation for the Catholic education at St. Joseph ’s. Endowments are rarely touched for annual or capital needs and then only the interest earned from the principal is considered.

As an educational institution, such as St. Joseph ’s, invests in its present by managing a capital campaign to enhance its facilities, it also invests in its future by this strong financial foundation. This concern about the future demonstrates to the larger extended community that St. Joseph ’s intends to be here in this community, theoretically, “in perpetuity.”  This fact is impressive to potential investors and perhaps even to lending institutions as the campaign progresses.

Planned Giving – Planned giving provides donors an opportunity for income to themselves and their loved ones, increase the yield of assets without incurring capital gains taxes, and reduce income and estate taxes. A planned gift always benefits the donor and the charitable institution, such as St. Joseph ’s Church and our schools. A planned gift may take the form of, in its simplest manner, a bequest by will or perhaps proceeds from life insurance policies, or trusts.

Fundraising for Specific Purposes - Many organizations have been established to run events that raise monies for specific purposes: e.g. - Adopt a Student, the Century Club, and the Carpenter’s Classic.  Of course, PTA and parents’ groups raise money for specific sports, clubs, and activities at our schools.

Please direct any comments or questions about giving to the Development Office by e-mail at sjctonyc@yahoo.com or call at 732-349-0018 X 2228.

DEVELOPMENT OFFICE REPORTS ON
OTHER FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES

Ø       Every Penny Counts Changed to S&H Community Rewards Program – The S&H Community Rewards Program allows non-profit groups like St. Joseph’s, in partnership with Food Circus Foodtowns, to have S&H Greenpoints donated to St. Joseph’s.  The Parish can then use the points to purchase items out of the S&H catalog or to receive a semi-annual check.  This program replaces Every Penny Counts.  Special Foodtown Community Rewards cards are available in the gathering space of the Church or by calling Mrs. Dale Polizzi at 732-349-0018, X2208.  You will still need to retain your Foodtown Club Card. For complete information on how the program works, please call Dale.

Ø      Cash-4-Trash – As we continue with this program, it is again requested that only qualifying laser jet and ink jet cartridges should be placed in the containers located in the gathering space of St. Joseph ’s Church.  Qualifying laser jet cartridges are Apple, Canon, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Lexmark, NEC, Okidata, Panasonic, Pitney Bowes, Ricoh, Sharp, and Xerox.  Qualifying inkjet cartridges are Apple, Canon, Hewlett Packard, and Lexmark.  Epson is no longer accepted. We are pleased to announce that toner drum cartridges are now acceptable for recycling.

Ø      Vehicle Management Services Through Vehicle Management Services (VMS), individuals designate vehicles as a charitable contribution. The major benefit is to the donor who receives a tax “write off.”  The Parish shares in the sale of the vehicle at auction.  For more information, call Steven Clapp, Vehicle Management Services, at 1-888-395-3955, or the Development Office at 732-349-0018, X2228.
